This wood fence in Chesterfield wraps a full backyard in pressure-treated pine with classic dog-ear pickets. It runs from the side of the house around the whole lot, and a wide double gate closes off the side yard next to the home.
It’s hard to beat a dog-ear design on a single-story home like this one. Because the style is simple and sturdy, it will still look right years from now, which is why it’s one of our favorite designs to build. For more on the styles we build locally, see our Chesterfield fence installation page.
Wood Fence in Chesterfield Project Highlights
Pressure-Treated Pine for Virginia Weather
We used pressure-treated pine for every picket, rail and post. The treatment helps the wood resist moisture, rot and insects, so it handles humid Virginia summers and freezing winters. Posts matter most because they sit in the soil. The American Wood Protection Association says ground-contact uses call for lumber treated to Use Category 4A or higher.
Left natural, the boards will weather to a soft silver-gray over time. Once the wood dries out, it also takes stain or sealer well. If the owners want a richer tone later, our guide to picking a stain color is a good place to start.
Dog-Ear Pickets and a Wide Double Gate
Setting the dog-ear pickets side by side gives the yard real screening, while the traditional look suits the house. The double gate spans the side yard between the fence line and the blue siding. It hangs on black strap hinges and opens wide enough for mowers and wheelbarrows, as well as bigger yard projects. If you’re still weighing options, compare this design with the other wood fence styles we build.
Posts Set Plumb on a Rolling Yard
Before the pickets went on, we set every post plumb and in line around the full perimeter. We let the picket tops follow the gentle roll of the yard, so the line looks clean from every angle. The back run passes close to a mature shade tree. From the first consultation to completion, the whole project took 3 weeks.
Why a Dog-Ear Wood Fence Works on an Open Lot
Before this build, the backyard sat open to the lots and sheds around it. A dog-ear wood fence is one of the most practical ways to turn a lot like that into a private backyard. This Chesterfield wood fence also gives the homeowners a sturdy, clearly marked boundary with plenty of life ahead of it.
