Project Description

This 2 tone vinyl fence in Fredericksburg, VA gives a family home backyard privacy and a clear boundary with a look of its own. Instead of a standard single-color install, it frames tan privacy panels with white posts, rails and caps. It also asks very little of the owners, since vinyl needs almost no upkeep.

2 Tone Vinyl Fence Project Highlights

Tan Panels in a White Frame

Rather than one uniform finish, this fence uses two coordinated vinyl tones. Tan fills each panel, while white posts, a white top rail and a white bottom rail outline it. That frame echoes the white trim on the house, so the fence looks like it belongs to this property rather than something picked from a catalog. For more color ideas, our guide to vinyl fence colors walks through popular options.

Stepping a Two-Tone Vinyl Fence Down the Slope

Along the side of the house, the yard drops toward the street and sidewalk. So we stepped the panels down the grade, keeping each section level and the tops in a clean stair pattern. The white frame makes those steps easy to read, which is one reason a two-color fence has to be set carefully.

A Private Backyard With Room for the Shed

In back, the 2 tone vinyl fence runs a long, straight line past a barn-style wood shed and a young tree in a fresh mulch ring. The solid panels close off views from the neighbors, while the tan keeps a solid privacy fence from feeling heavy. A matching walk gate near the house gives easy access to the side yard. In front of the house, an open bronze aluminum fence lines the street side of the yard.

Vinyl That Never Needs Paint

We used vinyl fencing because it won’t rot and never needs staining, sealing or paint. Upkeep comes down to washing. One manufacturer, VEKA, recommends in its vinyl fence care guide rinsing from the top down with a garden hose and a mild cleaner at least once a year.

Clean Lines Where the Colors Meet

A two-color fence makes any layout mistake obvious. Every panel, post and cap has to line up, and the color changes have to look deliberate. So we set each post accurately and paid close attention to the finish details, from the post caps down to the bottom rail.
