Privacy From the Nearby Road
Our goal was a private yard that still looked inviting from the outside. The new fence screens the backyard from the nearby roadway, so the space feels secluded. At the same time, it keeps a friendly look from the road side instead of reading as a blank wall.
Alternating Boards on Both Sides
The alternating board layout is what makes this a good neighbor fence. We placed boards on both the inside and outside faces, switching sides from one board to the next. A Long Roadside Run With a Cap Board
The fence runs in one long, straight line beside a sidewalk on a busy road, set back behind a strip of grass. A cap board tops every section. It gives this shadowbox privacy fence a finished edge and helps keep rain off the board ends. That matters because the USDA Forest Products Laboratory notes that water enters wood 10 to 100 times faster through end grain than through its other faces. At the far corner, the ground had just been graded and covered in straw. There, the fence turns and runs along the side of the lot.
Pressure-Treated Pine
We built the fence from quality pressure-treated pine, a common choice for wood fencing because of its strength. The treatment protects the boards against rot and insects, so the fence will last. The warm, natural finish of the pine also gives the home a rustic touch, and it blends in with its surroundings.
