Painted Wood for a Classic White Picket Look
We built the fence from top-grade, weather-resistant wood and painted it white. The paint gives it a fresh, clean look while also protecting the wood from the elements. It also seals the end grain on each picket, which matters because the USDA Forest Products Laboratory notes that water enters wood 10 to 100 times faster through end grain than through its other faces. Like any painted wood, it needs moderate maintenance, so a touch-up every so often keeps it looking sharp.
Evenly Spaced Pickets and Decorative Caps
The design sticks with tradition, using evenly spaced upright pickets with pointed tops and decorative post caps. The caps also give each post a finished top. Our crew placed each picket with care, so the spacing stays even down the whole run, including where the fence curves along the edge of the woods.
A Gate by the Patio and a Line That Follows the Yard
Near the brick patio, a gate with a crossbuck brace gives easy access from the driveway side of the house. From there, the white picket fence wraps the lawn, passes a mulched bed around a mature tree and curves along the wooded back edge of the yard. Because the pickets are open, the lawn and the trees beyond stay in view.
Height and Spacing That Keep the Yard Open
Before we started, we worked out the best height and picket spacing for the yard. That way the fence gives some privacy while still keeping an open, welcoming feel. From the first design consultation to the final touch-ups, the project took 5 weeks.
