This vinyl and wood fence in Hopewell went in on a waterfront lot. The back lawn runs down to a wide stretch of river. Across the water you see a far shoreline and a lot of open sky. So the fence had two opposite jobs. Along the side property lines, the owners wanted real screening from the neighboring lots. Toward the water, though, they wanted nothing that would take the view away.
We handled both in one project. Along the sides, we ran natural pressure-treated pine dog-ear privacy at 6′, then stepped it down to 4′ as it approaches the water. Beside the house, we installed white vinyl fencing in Hopewell in the Kinsale style. It pairs a solid privacy panel with a band of black aluminum balusters on top, plus a matching gate.

Privacy on the Sides, the View at the Water
The layout was the whole design of this Hopewell privacy fence. We ran full 6′ dog-ear board privacy along both side lines. That is where the neighboring lots meet the yard, so screening does real work there. As the side runs near the water, they step down from 6′ to 4′. The sides stay screened where it counts, and the lower stretch leaves the view from the house and lawn alone.
Closer to the house, the Kinsale vinyl carries a tall, solid white panel with a narrow band of black balusters along the top. The panel screens the walkway and side yard, while the baluster band keeps the fence from reading as a blank wall. Still, look through it at eye level and you catch the lawn and the river beyond. A white ball cap sits on each vinyl post. A matching Kinsale gate spans the garden walkway beside the house.
Two Materials, Each Doing Its Own Job
We picked each material for its job rather than for a matching look. The white vinyl by the house never needs stain or sealer, so an occasional rinse with a hose is the usual routine. The black balusters are aluminum, which is naturally corrosion resistant, as the Aluminum Association notes. That matters, since this is a humid river lot.
Along the sides of this vinyl and wood fence, pressure-treated wood privacy gives the owners a solid screen with real substance. Left alone, it will weather to a soft silver-gray over time. Planning Two Scopes on a Waterfront Lot
Two materials, a step-down and a shoreline mean the plan has to come before any digging. The drop from 6′ to 4′ lands at a post near the water. So the step looks deliberate, not like the panels simply ran out.
Mature shade trees stand throughout this yard, and the side runs pass beside them. As a result, the canopy still frames the view toward the river. On the house side, a Z-braced wood gate with black hinges and a latch opens next to the siding.
