This board and lattice wood fence gives a home in Richmond, VA backyard and side-yard privacy with a decorative lattice crown. We built it from pressure-treated lumber, with solid boards below and diagonal lattice on top. Now the owners have dependable privacy and gated access to the side yard. Its natural wood, open lattice and black hardware also suit the home’s white siding and brick.
Board and Lattice Wood Fence Project Highlights
Solid Boards Below, Lattice Above
This board and lattice wood fence uses full-height solid board panels for privacy at eye level. Across the top, a framed band of diagonal lattice softens the look while letting light and air pass through. A cap board runs along the top, and each post gets a clean cap. So the design keeps the seclusion of a solid fence while adding an architectural detail.
A Tight City Lot With Mature Plantings
Like many Richmond lots, this one sits close to its neighbors, with houses, sheds and older fences just past the property line. The new fence runs a long, straight line across the backyard and down a narrow side yard beside the house. Along the way, it tucks behind a large magnolia and a row of shrubs, so the plantings stay in front and the lattice-topped wood fence reads as a backdrop. On the side lawn, stepping stones lead past azaleas along the house toward the gate.
Pressure-Treated Lumber for Virginia Weather
We used pressure-treated lumber because treated wood holds up to moisture and decay far better than untreated boards. Posts matter most, since they sit in the ground. The American Wood Protection Association says ground contact calls for Use Category 4A (UC4A) or higher, so that is the rating to look for. The owners can let the wood weather naturally or stain it themselves later. Our post on whether you need pressure-treated wood covers the basics.
Gates That Match the Fence
At the end of a stepping-stone path, a lattice-topped walk gate closes off the side yard. It hangs on black tee hinges and closes with a matching black latch. Other gates near the AC unit and in the back corner by a metal shed give the owners more ways in and out. We set the posts plumb and lined up the panels and lattice cleanly, so each gate matches the run beside it.
