Project Description

We built this tan vinyl privacy fence in Henrico to close in a shaded backyard without the glare of white. The owners wanted the yard fully enclosed around their stone patio, grill and hot tub. However, they did not want a hard white wall competing with their white house and the mature trees overhead.

So we installed 6′ tan vinyl privacy panels with matching tan post caps and tan gates. Color was the real decision on this Henrico vinyl fence. The softer tone settles into the dappled light under the canopy and reads as background, not as a statement. As a result, the yard is fully private but still feels like part of the landscape around it.

Tan Vinyl Privacy Fence Project Highlights

A Color Choice That Warms the Yard

White vinyl is the default, and it looks handsome on an open lot. This yard, though, sits under mature trees beside a white house. So a bright white run would have pulled the eye straight to the property line. Tan reads warmer and quieter, and it sits comfortably against siding, brick and bark in dappled shade.

It also shows less of the pollen and dust every Virginia yard collects between washes. At 6′ tall, this tan vinyl privacy fence screens the patio, grill and hot tub. That turns the space into a proper outdoor room without making the yard feel any smaller. If you are weighing colors yourself, our guide to vinyl fence colors walks through the common choices.

A Warm Color Without Paint or Stain

Tan vinyl gives the owners a warm color without a painted finish to maintain. Because vinyl never needs paint or stain, there is nothing to peel or recoat. A painted or stained wood fence in a similar tone, by comparison, would need recoating over time to stay even.

Beyond an occasional rinse with a garden hose, a tan vinyl fence asks little of the owners. That means no weekends spent staining, sealing or repainting.

A Straight Line and Braced Gates Around the Patio

Tall vinyl panels do not forgive a careless layout. The faces are broad and smooth, so any wander in the post line shows up across a 6′ face. Here, each panel sits square, and the tops hold one continuous line along the lawn, the driveway edge and the patio.

The gates see the most use, so each one carries a black diagonal brace to help it stay square, along with black latch hardware. One gate opens onto the asphalt drive, and a double gate opens off the stone patio. If you are planning something similar, Henrico County generally does not require a building permit for fences up to 7 feet tall unless the fence serves as a pool barrier, according to the Henrico County Permit Center.

A Tan Vinyl Fence That Suits a Shaded Henrico Yard

The 6′ tan vinyl privacy fence at this Henrico home does what the family asked. It closes in the backyard and stands up to Virginia weather without a maintenance calendar.

The gates and post caps match the panels in the same tan. That color belongs under mature trees, rather than standing apart from them. Tan is quieter than white, and on a shaded lot beside a white house it is often the better choice.
