4 Commercial Pool Fence Styles for Virginia Businesses

A good commercial pool fence controls who gets into the pool area, meets code and still looks good to guests and members. For most Virginia hotels, apartment communities, clubs and HOA pools, the choice comes down to four styles: aluminum, vinyl, wood and chain link.

Below, we compare each one. Then we cover the code and gate details that matter most when the pool belongs to a business.

What Makes a Good Commercial Pool Fence?

A pool at a business sees more traffic than a backyard pool, so the fence has to work harder. Look for these four things when you compare options:

  • Access control. Gates that close and latch on their own, so a forgotten gate doesn’t leave the pool open after hours.
  • Durability. Materials that hold up to sun, rain and daily use without constant repairs.
  • Visibility. Staff often need to see into the pool area from the office, clubhouse or parking lot.
  • Appearance. The fence is part of the guest experience, so it should suit the property.

4 Commercial Pool Fence Styles to Consider

1. Aluminum for Open Views and Low Upkeep

Aluminum works well for many business pools because it keeps sightlines open. Staff can watch the water from outside the fence, and guests don’t feel boxed in. Powder-coated aluminum also won’t rust like steel, and it never needs paint or stain.

For a local example, we installed a 6 foot commercial aluminum fence at a business property in Colonial Heights. It secures the perimeter while keeping the street view open, the same balance a pool deck needs. See our aluminum fence installation options for styles and colors.

2. Vinyl Pool Fencing for Privacy

Vinyl makes a good pool fence for businesses when the pool sits near a road, a parking lot or neighboring homes. Solid panels give swimmers privacy, and the smooth surface cleans up with soap and water. Vinyl never needs paint, either. But a solid fence blocks sightlines, so plan how staff will keep an eye on the pool.

3. Wood for a Warm, Natural Look

Wood suits inns, clubhouses and neighborhood pools that want a natural feel. As a commercial pool fence, it works best where privacy and atmosphere matter more than low upkeep. It can be built tall for privacy or topped with lattice for a softer look. Still, wood needs more upkeep than vinyl or aluminum. Plan on regular sealing or staining to slow weathering, since a pool area takes constant sun and splash.

Chain link is the practical commercial pool fencing choice for big perimeters, such as a community pool next to ball fields or a large recreation area. It usually costs less than the other styles, and it keeps views open. Black vinyl-coated chain link looks cleaner than plain galvanized and blends into the landscape.

For example, we ran black chain link around the entire golf course at Brandermill Country Club, where it secures the perimeter without drawing the eye. If you go this route, mesh size matters, as the code section below explains. Learn more about our chain link fencing.

Not sure which style fits? Start with how the pool is used. If staff need to see the water, aluminum or chain link keeps the view open. If the pool faces a busy road or nearby homes, vinyl or wood gives swimmers privacy. You can also mix styles, for example aluminum along the deck and vinyl where the pool faces a parking lot.

Commercial Pool Fence Rules in Virginia

Before you pick a style, confirm the rules. Virginia’s regulations for hotel and other public pools (12VAC5-460-90) say any fences, gates and latches required by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code must be properly maintained and in good operable condition. So the fence has to pass code when it goes in and keep working after that.

The CPSC pool barrier guidelines, written for home pools, give a useful baseline:

  • A barrier at least 48 inches high, measured on the side away from the pool.
  • Pedestrian gates that open outward, away from the pool, and close and latch on their own.
  • Chain link mesh no larger than 1 1/4 inches square, unless slats reduce the openings.

Your local building department has the final say on a commercial project, so check permit requirements early. Our guide to Virginia pool fence regulations covers more of the local details.

Gate and Hardware Tips for Business Pools

The gates see the most wear on any commercial pool fence, so plan them as carefully as the fence itself:

  • Self-closing hinges and self-latching hardware on every pedestrian gate.
  • Gates in plain view of staff, so a propped gate gets noticed fast.
  • A service gate wide enough for maintenance equipment, kept locked when not in use.
  • Regular checks of hinges and latches, because Virginia’s pool rules require them to stay in working order.
